In July 2016, Disney Interactive announced that Disney Infinity's online services and overall spport were shutting down over the course of eight months. The shutdown included removal of downloadable versions from various app and game stores, turning off in-game purchases, to a complete shutdown of community features by March 3, 2017.
advertisementThe core game included on the Disney Infinity disc for console remains playable, including with full access to figures and play sets, but online multiplayer and sharing are no longer available.
Below are the original content updates for the game.
Disney Infinity unlocks the freedom to play with some of your favorite Disney, Disney/Pixar, and Marvel worlds like never before!
The original Disney Infinity, released in September 2013, brought original stories based on The Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters University, Cars, The Lone Ranger, and Toy Story, plus a selection of figures from other properties - All of whom could play together in user-created Toy Box worlds.
Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition - Marvel Super Heroes launched on September 23rd, 2014, bringing the Marvel Universe into Disney Infinity with Play Sets based on The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man. November 4th, 2014 saw the release of a new set of Disney Originals Figures such as Donald Duck and Tinker Bell, for use in Toy Box 2.0.
Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition - Star Wars launches August 30th, 2015 with a Starter Pack to be followed throughout 2015 and 2016 by additional Play Sets and Figures.
3.0 Edition will be available at launch for Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Playstation 3, and Wii U
3.0 Edition will first launch with a starter pack featuring the Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic Play Set, Ashoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker figures, 3.0 edition Game Disc, and 3.0 Edition Infinity Base.
At launch, the Playstation will get an exclusive starter pack (announced at E3 2015) featuring everything in the standard starter pack, plus the Star Wars: Rise of the Empire Play Set, and a Boba Fett figure. The Rise of the Empire Play Set will not be available separately or on other consoles until September 29th, 2015. The Boba Fett figure will not be available separately or to other consoles until sometime in 2016.
advertisementThe Star Wars: Rise Against the Empire Play Set will be released on September 29th, 2015. This Play Set puts players into stories from episodes 4 - 6 (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, & Return of the Jedi) and comes with Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia figures.
The Star Wars: The Force Awakens Play Set will release sometime after launch. This Play Set will put characters into the world of Episode 8, The Force Awakens.
In addition to the Figures included in the Play Sets, other figures will be available for purchase separately. Figures available separately include (release dates will vary) Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Star Wars Rebels figures Ezra, Kanan, Zeb, and Sabine.
Other Figures that have been glimpsed, but not officially announced, include Darth Maul and Yoda.
The Inside Out Play Set will be available at launch on August 30th, 2015, giving players the opportunity to play through an all new story in the world of Pixar's "Inside Out". The Play Set will come with Joy and Anger figures, with other Inside Out Figures available separately.
The Play Set is said to feature an original story (different from the film) with gameplay focusing on puzzle platforming rather than combat.
In addition to the Figures included in the Inside Out Play Set, the other main characters from the film - Disgust, Fear, and Sadness - will be available for purchase separately.
advertisementSpring 2016 will see the release of the Marvel: Battlegrounds Play Set. The Play Set will feature 4 player co-op, and new figures such as Ultron and Hulkbuster.
Five new Disney Figures wil be available at launch: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Olaf (Frozen), Sam Flynn (Tron Legacy), and Quorra (Tron Legacy).
Mulan and Peter Pan figures have also been announced for release at a date TBD.
New Figures from forthcoming Disney and Pixar films "Zootopia" and "The Good Dinosaur" have also been confirmed to be coming in the future.
Toy Box 3.0 will feature new ready-made gameplay options including platforming, racing, and a farming simulation.
All previously released Figures will work in the 3.0 Toy Box, and some 2.0 Marvel Figures will even be playable in certain 3.0 Play Sets.
3.0 Play Sets and Figures will require the 3.0 game disc (or download), and cannot be used with the 2.0 & 1.0 software.
At launch, it is likely the only way to play 3.0 content will be to purchase a 3.0 Starter Kit. But, as they did with 2.0, it is likely that, sometime after launch, players with Disney Infinity 2.0 software will have the opportunity to download a 3.0 "update".
advertisementWhile the overall concept is the same - place physical plastic Figures on a base (or "portal") to bring the character into the game - there are many ways in which Disney Infinity is much more than just Skylanders with a Disney skin. The biggest difference is the focus on user creation and playful experimentation in the Toy Box mode. Power Discs, are another unique aspect of the game, using physical collectible discs to add upgrades to Play Set characters and iconic items and themes to the Toy Box.
A "Starter Kit" that comes with the Game Disc, the Infinity Base, Play Sets, and Figures.
Play Sets are story-mode campaigns based on a single Disney Property. The starter kit comes with three (Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters University, and The Incredibles), and there will be two more available for purchase separately at launch (Cars and The Lone Ranger). Only Figures that belong to a Play Set can be used in that Play Set.
The Toy Box mode is where players can create their own worlds and bring in any combination of Figures to play in them! The Toy Box offers a basic set of tools to build and play with, while playing through the story modes in the Play Sets will import more items.
Users can upload their creations to be shared with friends (even cross-platform!), or be considered for feature in a moderated online community.
Both 2 player local and 4 player on-line co-op are available. Local Co-Op is available in the Play Sets (story mode) as long as players have at least two Figures from that play set (so it is not possible with just the Starter Kit). Online co-op will not be available in the Play Sets.
advertisementBoth local and on-line co-op are available in the Toy Box. Players may only play online with players on their friends list. It also means that your friend needs a character from that theme.
Any figure can be used on any platform. The Infinity Bases though are platform-specific.
No! While the 3DS Starter Kit comes with the same basic items - Infinity Base, the same Figures, a Power Disc, it is a very different game called "Disney Infinity Toy Box Challenge". The 3DS version will not feature Play Sets or a Toy Box in the same way the consoles do, instead the game is comprised of a collection of mini games played on customizable game boards. Check out the Nintendo 3DS Toy Box Challenge page for more info.
The Disney Infinity: Toy Box apps on iPhone, Android, and PC contain the full Disney Infinity experience. Users start in the Toy Box, and can access the Disney Infinity Shop to purchase digital versions of Disney Infinity items -- including Play Sets, Characters, Power Discs, and Toy Box Games. These platforms do not use a physical Disney Infinity Base, but you can still buy retail Disney Infinity toys and then register them (via a code included in the package) for use in your Disney Infinity game.
Starting November 4th, 2014, Disney Infinity 2.0 digital upgrade apps were also made also available on PSN, Xbox Live, and the Wii U eShop. These products are also feature-complete, and the original (1.0) Disney Infinity Base as well as all Disney Infinity toys can be used with this version. Unlike the PC/Mobile versions, however, these console upgrade versions require the use of a physical Disney Infinity Base, and you must have at least one Disney Infinity Character to get started.
